From 1 October 2026, CBOS has transitioned to Consumer Affairs Tasmania and Building Standards Tasmania, according to Consumer Affairs Tasmania’s Tasmanian consumer protection requirements, dated 7 July 2023. If you hold an interstate licence and plan to work in Tasmania under automatic mutual recognition (AMR), you must notify the relevant regulator before you start work. Figures checked 1 October 2026.
What does CBOS mean in older references?
References to CBOS should be read as referring to the relevant regulatory function within Consumer Affairs Tasmania or Building Standards Tasmania. For a plumber checking Tasmania licensing, use the relevant regulator’s current page to confirm the occupation listing and the applicable mutual-recognition pathway.
An older document may still use the CBOS name. That does not remove the need to check the current consumer-protection requirements.
Who must meet the consumer-protection requirements?
Consumer Affairs Tasmania says the public protections described on its page are required for each licensed occupation listed there. All Tasmanian licensees, and people working under mutual recognition or automatic mutual recognition, must meet those requirements for the duration they hold a licence.
| Your situation | What the current material requires |
|---|---|
| Tasmanian licensee | Meet the requirements for the duration you hold a licence. |
| Working under mutual recognition or AMR | Meet the requirements for the duration you hold a licence. |
| Planning to work in Tasmania under AMR | Provide notification. |
For plumbing work, check the current occupation list rather than assuming that the agency transition answers every licensing question.
What must an interstate licence holder do under AMR?
Provide notification before starting work. This requirement continues after the 1 October 2026 transition to the new agencies; the change of regulator name does not remove the notification step.
The consumer-protection requirements also continue for the duration you hold the licence.
What should you check next?
- The relevant regulator’s current page for the occupation listing and applicable requirements.
- Whether the work is being done under mutual recognition or automatic mutual recognition.
- Your policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) if insurance terms are part of the decision.
This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Check the relevant regulator page and your policy’s PDS before making a licensing or insurance decision.
